Reinforcement Estimator
Estimate reinforcement weights and bar counts from a user-defined steel ratio.
Project & Input Data
Your project criterion: take it from the bar bending schedule or comparable elements. No standard ratio is assumed.
An editable user-defined allowance — not a universal engineering requirement.
Engineering Assumptions
- Mass per metre is the geometric round-bar value: (diameter in mm)² ÷ 162.28.
- The steel ratio and the waste/lap allowance are user-entered; this is an ordering/cost estimate, not structural design.
- All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.
Formula Summary
- Base steel mass = concrete volume × steel ratio
- Total mass = base × (1 + waste%)
- Mass per metre = d² ÷ 162.28
- Bars = ceil(total mass ÷ (mass per metre × bar length))

Engineering Insight
The steel ratio dominates the result: a 20 kg/m³ difference moves the order and the cost materially, so use a ratio taken from the bar schedule whenever one exists.
Recommended Action
Reconcile the estimate against the detailed bar bending schedule once issued, and confirm commercial bar lengths with the supplier before ordering.

For budgeting and procurement you usually start from a steel ratio in kg per cubic metre taken from your own design or historical data. This tool turns that ratio into total mass, adds your waste allowance and converts to a bar count for one chosen diameter and stock length.
Method and assumptions
- Base steel mass = concrete volume × steel ratio
- Total mass = base × (1 + waste%)
- Mass per metre = d² ÷ 162.28
- Bars = ceil(total mass ÷ (mass per metre × bar length))
- Mass per metre is the geometric round-bar value: (diameter in mm)² ÷ 162.28.
- The steel ratio and the waste/lap allowance are user-entered; this is an ordering/cost estimate, not structural design.
- All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.
Worked example
40 m³ of concrete at 110 kg/m³, priced as Ø16 mm bars in 12 m lengths with 7% waste.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Base steel mass | 4,400 kg |
| Waste / lap allowance | 308 kg |
| Total steel mass | 4,708 kg |
| Total in tonnes | 4.708 t |
| Mass per metre | 1.578 kg/m |
| Commercial bars | 249 bars |

Frequently asked questions
- Where does the steel ratio come from?
- You enter it. It is a design- or experience-based project criterion; the tool never assumes a ratio for a given element type.
- How is bar unit mass calculated?
- With the standard relation mass per metre = d² ÷ 162.28 for a round bar of diameter d in mm. Bar count is rounded up to a whole bar.
- Does it produce a bar bending schedule?
- No. It is an estimating aid for mass and bar count, not a detailing or BBS tool, and it does not cover laps, hooks or cutting optimisation.
