Early-stage projects need a defensible load figure before the detailed schedules exist. This Professional calculator assembles one from inputs you control: area × load density gives the connected load, additional loads are added, diversity reduces it to a demand load, spare capacity is applied, and power factor converts the result to kVA for transformer or generator discussions.
Method and assumptions
- Connected (kW) = area × density ÷ 1000 + additional
- Demand (kW) = connected × diversity%
- Demand + spare (kW) = demand × (1 + spare%)
- Demand (kVA) = demand+spare ÷ PF
- Load density, diversity factor and power factor are user-entered from the project's own load study or governing code.
- A preliminary decision-support estimate: the result does not replace an approved design calculation or review by a competent authority.
- All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.
Frequently asked questions
- Where does the load density come from?
- From your own load study or the governing requirement for the building type. The engine stores no W/m² table and applies no default figure on your behalf.
- How are diversity and spare capacity applied?
- Diversity is a percentage of the connected load, and spare capacity is then added on top of that demand figure, so the two never compound in the wrong order.
- Can it replace a design load schedule?
- No. It is a preliminary decision-support estimate. Final distribution, protection and sizing must come from an approved design reviewed by a competent engineer.
- Why does the tool need power factor?
- Because supply equipment is rated in kVA. The demand in kW is divided by the power factor you enter to express the same load in kVA.
