Blockwork Calculator

Estimate block counts from wall area (mortar quantities not included).

Project & Input Data

no.
%

An editable user-defined allowance — not a universal engineering requirement.

Engineering Assumptions

  • Counts are based on the block face area and exclude mortar joint thickness.
  • This tool counts blocks only and does not estimate mortar, which requires an approved mix design and joint thickness.
  • All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.

Formula Summary

  • Gross wall area = L × H × walls
  • Net wall area = max(gross − openings, 0)
  • Block face area = block L × block H
  • Base blocks = net area ÷ block face area
  • Total blocks = ceil(base blocks × (1 + waste%))

Engineering Insight

Ignoring mortar joints yields a slightly conservative (higher) block count, which suits initial ordering. Supplier-to-supplier block size differences change the count materially.

Recommended Action

Verify the supplier's actual block dimensions and check opening deductions against the architectural drawings before confirming the order.

This calculator is fully usable as it is. Professional adds saved projects, calculation history and PDF/Excel reports; Premium adds the integrated workflows and the BOQ generator.

Use this page when you need a block count for procurement or a bill of quantities line. It works from the net wall area and the block face size you actually specify, applies your waste percentage, and rounds up because blocks are bought whole.

Method and assumptions

  • Gross wall area = L × H × walls
  • Net wall area = max(gross − openings, 0)
  • Block face area = block L × block H
  • Base blocks = net area ÷ block face area
  • Total blocks = ceil(base blocks × (1 + waste%))

Worked example

One 10.00 m × 3.00 m wall, deducting 2.00 m² of openings, using 400 × 200 mm block faces with a 5% waste allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include mortar?
No. The count uses the block face area and ignores joint thickness. Mortar volume needs an approved mix and joint dimension, which this engine does not assume.
Why is the result always a whole number?
Blocks cannot be ordered in fractions, so the total after waste is rounded up to the next whole block.
Can I model several identical walls at once?
Yes — the number-of-walls input multiplies the gross area before openings are deducted.
What block size should I enter?
The face length and height of the block specified for your works. No standard block size is assumed for you.
