Tiles / Flooring Calculator
Estimate tile quantities and wastage.
Project & Input Data
An editable user-defined allowance — not a universal engineering requirement.
Engineering Assumptions
- The floor is a regular rectangle and joint widths are neglected.
- Complex laying patterns and vein matching are not included.
- All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.
Formula Summary
- Floor area = L × W × areas
- Tile area = tile L × tile W
- Base tiles = floor area ÷ tile area
- Total tiles = ceil(base tiles × (1 + waste%))

Engineering Insight
Diagonal patterns, cuts, irregular room geometry, large tile formats and shade-matching requirements may all require a higher waste allowance than the default.
Recommended Action
Order an attic-stock surplus from the same production batch and review the setting-out drawing before confirming the quantity.

This calculator is fully usable as it is. Professional adds saved projects, calculation history and PDF/Excel reports; Premium adds the integrated workflows and the BOQ generator.
Estimating tiles by area alone under-orders every time cuts are involved. This calculator divides the floor area by the tile area, applies the cutting-waste percentage you choose, and rounds up to whole tiles so the order matches what the site can actually lay.
Method and assumptions
- Floor area = L × W × areas
- Tile area = tile L × tile W
- Base tiles = floor area ÷ tile area
- Total tiles = ceil(base tiles × (1 + waste%))
- The floor is a regular rectangle and joint widths are neglected.
- Complex laying patterns and vein matching are not included.
- All percentages and inputs are user-defined; the calculation is purely arithmetic and assumes no particular code or specification.
Worked example
Two rooms of 5.20 m × 4.40 m tiled with 600 × 600 mm tiles and 8% cutting waste.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total floor area | 45.76 m² |
| Tile area | 0.36 m² |
| Base tile count (whole tiles) | 128 tiles |
| Exact calculated requirement | 127.11 tiles |
| Waste allowance | 10 tiles |
| Recommended total tiles | 138 tiles |
These figures are produced by the same calculator engine used on this page.
Frequently asked questions
- Are skirting and thresholds included?
- No. The result covers floor field tiles only. Skirting, thresholds, adhesive and grout are separate items.
- How is rounding handled?
- The tile count is always rounded up to the next whole tile after waste is applied, because part tiles cannot be ordered.
- Can I use it for wall tiling?
- Yes, if you enter the wall area as the surface dimensions. The arithmetic is the same; only your waste assumption may differ.
